Favorite room in house: I love any room that provides opportunity for great conversation. In our house
that means the kitchen, breakfast area, or living room. Of those, I particularly
enjoy spending time in the living room. It has an old wood-burning stove on a
big hearth. It's a cozy room with its comfy seating and warm environment.
Favorite piece of furniture: I do love an old love seat that belongs to my parents. It originally belonged
to my grandparents. It's value is more sentimental that monetary. It has a wood
base and frame with a curved camel back and arms. It's very vintage-chic. I
would love for it to become mine so I could recover it and give it some updated
personality.
Favorite pastime: Currently running and reading. Running began simply as a form of exercise;
it turned out to be something that I really enjoy. Right now I enjoy learning
more about it and spending time with others who enjoy it as well. Reading is something
I've always done. I like to expose myself to new ideas and viewpoints; whether
it is fictional content or otherwise.
Design Style: Eclectic. Sometimes I think that people use this as a stock answer because
it is an easy way of doing whatever they want, which isn’t necessarily all bad.
I love using aspects of different movements or styles and joining them in new
ways. For example: Upholstering antique pieces of furniture in contemporary
patterns or colors. The contrast between an ornate chair frame and a clean-lined,
crisp-colored fabric accentuates both equally.
Favorite design books/magazines: Architectural Digest does a great job of featuring different aspects of design. It doesn't choose
features based on what's trendy, but rather what's beautiful and interesting.
Design: An Illustrated Historical Overview by Thomas Hauffe - It is a great reference book that notes influential design
from the mid 1700s to the 1990s. And because of my love for sketching: Visual Notes by Norman Crowe and Paul Laseau. It is a great collection of other designers’
visual note taking techniques, as well as a general guide for accurately recording
visual information.
Favorite room to design: The Great Room because it provides you with a wide variety of options. It is
one of the most public spaces in a home and, therefore, provides the client an
opportunity for self-expression. It is interesting to see how needs differ from
one client to the next.
