Choose a room color? Where do I start?!
The color of a room can be the difference between blah and beautiful! But selecting
that perfect color can be a taxing process for many. Sometimes, it’s as easy
as choosing your favorite color and you’re done. Oftentimes, however, you must
consider other factors, such as the décor or use of the room. Here are a few key
points to consider…
- Consider the theme of the room: understanding the décor of a room will assist
in color selection. A shade of peach cobbler may not be conducive to a room filled
with art deco furniture and cool steel accents.
- Take a peak in your own closet: often, colors you select for your clothing are
similar to what you may like in your home. Are you an earth-tone person or prefer
bold colors? Do you live for trends or favor the classic look?
- Draw inspiration: look around your room. Is there a color within the bedding
you particularly like? Does the vase on the shelf offer any suggestions? A shade
of red in the antique rug on the floor may be just what you had in mind.
- Try it on: once you have narrowed down your selections, buy color samples (most
paint stores carry these) and paint a few color swatches on the walls. Wait a
few days and see which one has the greatest appeal.
Whatever color you ultimately choose, use this time as an opportunity to explore
your creativity and change your room in a very impressive, cost-effective way.
Once you have your color in place, consider adding texture or other effects through
a variety of specialty techniques. But first things first…
