Outdoor Spaces
With summer in full swing, you may be considering a little al fresco entertaining.
Here are a few suggestions for making your outdoor living space comfortable, functional,
and the ideal space for spending time with friends.
- Depending on how your outside space will be used, you should consider traffic
flow. For instance, if your outdoor area will include cooking and dining, you
will want to ensure smooth access from the kitchen. If the space is an extension
of your indoor living room, be sure placement of furnishings is appropriate to
tie the two areas together. Take a look at a floor plan that shows optimal traffic flow from indoors out.
- Of course, furnishings decisions will also depend upon how the space will be
used. Will the furniture need to be easily re-arranged to accommodate parties
of different sizes? If so, consider furnishings with casters or wheels. Is the
dining area a more permanent space? If so, you may wish to incorporate a chandelier
or pendant to add a special touch.
- Indoor / outdoor fabrics work best for these spaces. Most are resistant to mold
or mildew as well as fading; however, if the furniture will be fully exposed to
the elements, add a piece (trunk or chest) that can store small cushions or a
closet to house them in the off-season.
