Postcard from Paris Partners with Furman University to Design
Southern Living Showcase Home
Cliffs Cottage at Furman will open to public June 14
(Greenville, SC: June 9, 2008) Postcard from Paris is a key partner in a unique
design project on the Furman University campus that incorporates and promotes
the very best in green building practices.
The Cliffs Cottage at Furman, a Southern Living Showcase Home, is a model of
environmentally responsible design, sustainable building techniques and materials,
and energy-saving systems. From the bamboo flooring to the solar panels in the
roof, the 3,400-square-foot residential home has all the latest technological
innovations in sustainable living.
As the interior design firm for the showcase home, Postcard from Paris defined
the home’s interior specifications as well as selected, procured, and installed
furnishings, artwork, window treatments, and accessories for the project.
“Our firm has been honored to be a part of this extraordinary initiative led
by Furman University and Southern Living,” notes Linda McDougald of Postcard from
Paris. “Designing responsibly, with an understanding of how your work impacts
the natural environment, enhances a lifestyle in very exciting ways. Selection
of materials and furnishings, effective use of natural light, implementation of
lighting and energy controls – these are simple elements to address and they can
have such a positive influence on the home equally as much as on the environment.”
The commitment to sustainability doesn’t end with the house itself. The same
environmentally sound concepts were applied to the landscaping, organic and formal
gardens, rainwater collection systems and even the driveway and walkways surrounding
the home. It is expected to be among the first residential facilities in the
nation to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
The principal partners in the Southern Living Showcase Home project are Furman,
Southern Living, The Cliffs Communities, Duke Energy, and Bank of America.
The Cliffs Cottage opens for public tours on Saturday, June 14 and will remain
open for one year. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens (62+),
and $5 for children (6-11). Children five-and-under admitted free. All children
must be accompanied by an adult.
The tour hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays (9 a.m.-3 p.m.), Thursdays (9
a.m.-7 p.m.), Saturdays (9 a.m.- 4:30 pm) and Sundays (10 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.). The
